A kris can be divided into 3 parts: Blade – bilah or wilah / Hilt – hulu / Sheath – warangka
The Kris sword is known for its distinct 13 bends wavy (flowing water) blade design. Although earliest Kris weaponry go back to the 10th century, it is recognised as coming into its existence around 1361 AD in the kingdom of Majapahit, East Java.
Kris are a weapon and spiritual object – and considered to possess magical powers. They are carved in meticulous detail – and made from various materials: iron, precious or rare types of wood, gold and ivory.
The kris’s aesthetic value is the dhapur – the form and design of the blade of which there are about 60 variants. The pattern of metal alloy decoration on the blade is the parmor which can have about 250 variants.
