This nicely cast Buddha statue has behind him an elaborate aureole symbolising the divinity of Buddha. He has a third eye on his forehead symbolising the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering.
The thumb and index finger of his left hand touch at their tips to form a circle – representing the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom – symbolising generosity. This is the Teaching or dharmachakra mudra. This mudra symbolises one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha, the occasion when he preached to his companions the first sermon after his Enlightenment in the Deer Park at Sarnath.
