Prince Panji is the hero of the Panji cycle of stories. This Panji Prince mask is from the centuries-old Topeng tradition in Bali and Java where dramatic performances of stories based on the royal courts about kings, princes, heroes, clowns and myths are performed – similar in a way to English Elizabethan dramas.
In all parts of Java, the Topeng masks share the aesthetics based on the iconography of the Wayang Kulit and particularly Wayang Golek puppets. Carved out of wood they resemble the faces of the three-dimensional Wayang Golek puppets.
This authentic Antique Wayang Topeng mask has been actively used in traditional dance open-air performances. Consistent with the age and use of the mask there are some areas of paint scuffing as pictured. Please view all of the photos with respect to its condition…
