This very nicely detailed keris handle depicts Nawa Sari – carved from hardwood Ebony. The Nawa Sari image is frequently encountered in Bali at or near the entrance to a shrine or temple and sometimes near the entrance to an important building.

In Bali the Nawa Sari is regarded as one of the most powerful guardian figures –  and when employed as the hilt of a keris his function is the same as near a shrine or building entrance. Nawa Sari guards the keris against the possibility of an evil entity.
