Antique 3 Ornate Scrimshaw Buffalo Bone & 1 Wood Tribal Lime / Medicine Containers
Region: East Timor Indonesia – early 1900’s
Length: 1 x 18cm / 1 x 17cm / 1 x 15cm / / 1 x 13cm
Three of these scrimshaw tribal Lime powder / medicine containers are made from buffalo bone. They are beautifully hand etched with traditional geometric patterns and carved wooden stoppers.
These containers held lime-powder which is an essential part of the betel nut mix. Chewed betel nut acts as a stimulant similar to caffeine or nicotine, which suppress hunger, reduces stress and heighten the senses. The containers are also used to hold powdered herbs and medicine.
Please note! Indonesian water buffalo horn and bones are not on the endangered species list. These items are used artefacts and in reasonable condition considering their age and usage. Please view all of the photos…
