The kendi is a well known vessel in S/E Asia having played a significant role in the rituals and daily life of the region since ancient times. They are made of unglazed fired clay and ideal for its cooling properties and portability – such as carrying water when traveling from village to village or for longer journeys by boat.
Along the Yom River north of the walled city are the archaeological remains of several kilns. There are about 1,000 kilns on both banks of the river within 10 kilometers of the old city. This area is where Sawankhalok ceramics were produced, which became an important economic contributor to the Sukhothai kingdom. These ceramics not only served the domestic needs of the people, from food storage to water pipes, they were also produced for export, and have been found as far away the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan.
This many centuries old terracotta Kendi drinking vessel is in reasonable condition considering the age & usage of the item. There is a small section broken-off where water is filled. Please view all of the photos…
