A dedicated process is required to craft these gorgeous baskets by artisans of Tenganan.
This handwoven basket was made from the fast-growing Ata reed. After harvesting the reeds are separated into small thin strands. Skilled artisans (working on one basket for up to a month) intricately weaving the strands into a basket. Once fully woven the baskets are boiled and left in the sun to dry for a week. Afterwards, to strengthen the weave and condition the fibres the baskets are smoked over coconut shell clippings. A dedicated process is required to craft these gorgeous baskets.
